Why Choose a Board-Certified Dermatologist?

Board-Certified Dermatologists are medical physicians with 12 years of education including between 12,000 -16,000 hours of direct patient care training specific to the diagnosis and treatment over 3,000 skin, hair, and nail diseases/conditions. They also treat patients who want help with cosmetic concerns such as aging, unwanted hair or scars. A benefit of seeing a board-certified dermatologist for your cosmetic concern is to make sure your concern is truly cosmetic. For example, a pimple that won’t go away could be a skin cancer. Dermatologists can spot problems like this, which you may not know you have.

Know that some non-dermatologist physicians or non-physicians may highlight their board-certification. However, physicians can be Board-Certified in any specialty in which they trained including family medicine, internal medicine or plastic surgery. Simply saying "Board-Certified" without denoting "Board-Certified Dermatologist" does not imply specific training in skin, hair and nail disease. Furthermore, there is no pathway for board-certification in dermatology for non-physicians that is recognized by the American Medical Association or the American Board of Medical Specialties.
